Reading
Your child’s’ reading books will be changed weekly. Two books will be brought home, one being the class reading book, the other a book of their choice at the appropriate reading level. They will also bring home their keywords. Please encourage your child to read at home and practice their words. We really appreciate your comments in their book.
PE
PE kits should be in school everyday and will come home at the end of each half term. Rowan will have PE on Tuesdays and Hazel will have PE on Wednesdays. Please ensure your child’s clothes are labelled and trainers are included.
Learning Logs
Learning Logs will be brought home every Thursday. Class teachers share Learning Logs throughout the week. Please encourage your child to complete these activities and return by the following Tuesday.
Snack and Water
Please bring a water bottle and snack daily. Ensure water bottles and snack pots are clearly labelled. If your child is buying fruit tuck, please bring in £1.50 on Monday.
Forest School
Every other Thursday children will head to the forest in our school grounds for ‘Forest School’. Please ensure your child has wellington boots (labelled) in school as it can get quite muddy!

Curriculum Information
Autumn 1 Topic – Family Album
During the Autumn term we will be finding out about our families and what makes them special. Also we will be looking at old fashioned toys and games and how clothing was washed a long time ago. We have been to St Fagans and learnt about old fashioned toys and had a chance to play with them too. We have made a graph of our favourite old toys and it seems our favourite was the cup and ball!!! We have old fashioned role play area where we remember how to wash clothes in the olden days like Beti Bwt showed us at St Fagans.
Autumn 2 Topic – Pop Up
We will be looking at traditional fairy tales and investigating and making simple ‘pop up’ mechanisms.
Spring 1 Topic – Superheroes
This half term we will explore waterproof materials suitable for a superhero cape, design and create superheroes and make our own comic strips.
Spring 2 Topic – Community Explorers
Throughout this topic we look at the local community and compare it to Lesotho. We will also make African style food and create traditional African music and dances.
Summer 1 Topic – Happiness
During this half term we look at the things that make us happy including healthy food and exercise.
Summer 2 Topic – Wriggle and Crawl
To end the year one of our most popular topics which involves a trip to Cosmeston. We investigate lots of different mini beasts and some of the creepy crawlies come and join us in class!!!
Language, Literacy and Communication
All pupils from Year 1 up will take part in daily guided reading sessions which are designed to develop all pupils reading skills. Pupils will be grouped to ensure they are all reading a challenging text.
Mathematical Development
We will be continuing with the Abacus Maths scheme this year as it has proved to be very successful. The children will be grouped according to ability which will enable them to receive the support and challenges that they need. BIG Maths will also continue and children will complete a weekly test on mental maths skills taught in class.
